What are veneers?

Veneers are wafer-thin porcelain shells made to fit the front of your teeth. They’re usually used on the “smile” teeth, while back teeth like molars need crowns that cover the whole tooth.

Veneers are usually considered a cosmetic dentistry service because they’re mainly used to improve appearance. But, since veneers are made of a strong porcelain or porcelain composite material, they’re quite strong and help reinforce your teeth, too.

When do I need veneers?

Veneers are often a good choice if you have healthy teeth but don’t like the way your smile looks. Some problems commonly resolved with veneers can include:

  • Severe tooth discoloration
  • Cracks
  • Chips
  • Tooth gaps
  • Misshapen teeth
  • Mild misalignment

With veneers, you can resize, reshape, and completely remodel the appearance of your teeth while still retaining your own natural teeth.

How does the veneer process work?

At your first appointment, Dr. Yun evaluates your teeth and discusses the changes you want to make. She takes digital X-rays at this time, and you’ll work together to determine the best plan for veneers.

Next, Dr. Yun typically prepares your teeth for the veneer with light buffing. This small bit of enamel removal makes room for your veneer to fit perfectly.

Then, Dr. Yun makes an impression of the tooth or teeth for your veneers to be created at a lab. You’ll wear temporary veneers home that day.

At your next appointment, Dr. Yun removes the temporary veneers to place your permanent ones. With your permanent veneers in place, you can use your teeth normally without restrictions again.

How long do veneers last?

It can vary based on your oral hygiene habits, but if you take excellent care of your veneers they can last as much as 15 years.

How do I brush and floss with veneers?

Use the same brushing and flossing techniques you use now, but be extra cautious to floss carefully around the top part of the veneer to avoid loosening it. If you notice your veneer loosening, see Dr. Yun as soon as possible so she can reattach it firmly.
